The Town of Shelburne regulates all building and renovation projects through our Zoning By-law. Whether you are building a deck, shed or complete home renovation, you must apply for a building permit. You should also contact Ontario One Call before you dig.

Building permits

As of February 18th, 2020, residents in Dufferin County will be able to submit building permit applications through Dufferin Counties online Portal in a few easy steps.

Step 1

Ensure you have all the documentation required for your building permit. Remember that incomplete applications will not be reviewed. Checklists and brochures are available on the Dufferin County website to help guide you through the process.

If you have additional questions, please reach out to Dufferin County - (519) 941-2816 EXT. 2700

Step 2

Visit Dufferin Counties Portal and create a profile. This step takes only a few minutes.

Step 3

Click Apply for a Building Permit, fill out your information, and upload your files.
The Portal will guide you through step by step.

Step 4

Applications will be reviewed by staff from your local municipality to ensure construction complies with all applicable law, and by a County Building Official to ensure compliance with the Ontario Building Code.

Step 5

If everything is approved, your permit will be issued through the Portal. Print out your permit card and your approved plans, and you're ready to start construction. Pay permit fees and schedule inspections directly through the Portal.

Home building projects

Review our decks, sheds, fences and pool building guidelines before you start your next project.

Decks

Any deck larger than 100 square feet or elevated more than two feet will require a building permit. You will need to get approval from the Town of Shelburne and then apply for a permit from the County of Dufferin. Read more about our specific deck-building requirements.

Fences

The Town of Shelburne regulates the construction of fences through the Fence By-law. You don't need a building permit to construct a fence.

Follow these guidelines when building a fence:

  • A fence on private property cannot exceed 6 feet in height above lot grade
  • You can't build a fence or ornamental structure on any street allowance belonging to the Town
  • Call Ontario One Call before you dig

Failure to follow the by-law may result in a $300 fine.

Sheds

To build a shed on your property, you will need to get a building permit first. You also must meet the following guidelines:

  • Sheds must be set back a minimum of four feet from the side yard lot lines
  • Sheds cannot cover more than 5% of the total lot area
  • Sheds must be a minimum of three feet from the main building
  • The maximum height for a shed is 9.84 feet

Pools

To put in a pool on your property, you must follow regulations set out in the Pool Enclosures By-law. Please follow all of our pool guidelines:

  • All in-ground pools must be enclosed
  • Above ground pools over 3 feet in height must be enclosed
  • All pool enclosures must be secured with a self-closing gate
  • Pools must be located at least four feet from the fence
