The Town of Shelburne has made the difficult decision to cancel the opening of the Community Garden for the 2020 gardening season. During these difficult times, COVID-19 has put a strain on all residents and on Town resources. Our Public Works team has been operating with reduced manpower and work schedules to ensure the safety of our workers. Under these conditions the construction of the Garden, which planned to begin in May 2020, is not possible. The Community garden will be constructed in the Fall 2020 and will open to Gardener’s May 2021.
The need for a Community Garden in the Town of Shelburne is in response to the findings of a report commissioned in 2016/17 by Dufferin County and Wellington Dufferin Guelph Public Health, ‘Reducing Poverty in Dufferin.
The Community Improvement Plan (CIP), which engaged the community, during 3 separate workshops over a period of 6 months, has recognized a Community Garden as part of the revitalization of Fiddle Park in the “12 Big Moves”.
The recommended location for the community garden is Fiddle park in the North East area of the park and adjacent to the washroom/kitchen facility. Fiddle Park is approximately 114.5 acres of which 83.5 acres are designated natural. Amenities at the park include: pavilion, washrooms, and fully functional kitchen, walking trails, electricity, and water. The location of the community garden, which will be accessible, would be about 1.05 acres.
