The Town’s Traffic and Parking By-law is currently under review. The purpose of the review is to update the By-law to meet the demands of today’s traffic environment.
Several changes to the By-law are being proposed with regard to enforcement practices and procedures. A summary of these changes includes:
- Changing the parking prohibition from midnight to 8 am to 2 am to 6 am
- Introducing a new provision for the parking or stopping of vehicles 0.3 metres from a driveway or private lane.
- Altering the overnight enforcement strategy from seasonally (in the winter months) to a practice that is in effect throughout the year. Proactive between Nov 1 to April 30 and complaint-based May 1 to Oct 31
- Altering enforcement of parking on or over a sidewalk from daytime hours to 24 hr enforcement.
- Introducing a new provision for vehicles:
-
- that park within 3 metres of a fire hydrant
- that park in accessible and do not display so Officers can read the permit details
- that park in electric vehicle charging stations and are not an electric vehicle, or are not charging an electric vehicle
Changes to the Traffic By-law are being proposed in order to:
- provide clarification of infractions,
- respond to resident complaints and current community trends
- increase the efficiency of By-law Services staff, and
- ensure that the Traffic by-law remains the appropriate tool so that pedestrian and vehicular safety is maintained within the Town
Council is requesting an increase from the $15.00 set fine ($10.00 early payment) for most minor infractions to $40.00 set fine for most minor infractions.
