National Day for Truth and Reconciliation

The Town of Shelburne honours the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation, a day dedicated to remembering the children who never returned home, the Survivors of residential schools, their families, and their communities. This national day encourages reflection, learning, and a collective commitment to reconciliation, healing, and meaningful action.

Each year, the Town recognizes this important day in alignment with community partners, Indigenous voices, and national calls to action, creating opportunities for residents to learn, participate, and reflect in a meaningful and respectful way.

About the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation

Observed annually on September 30, the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation acknowledges the tragic legacy of the residential school system and honours the resilience of Indigenous Peoples across Canada. It is a day to pause, reflect, and engage in ongoing learning about the history and impacts of colonization, while strengthening commitments to reconciliation at the local and national levels.

The day also builds upon the spirit of Orange Shirt Day, which recognizes the experiences of Survivors and promotes awareness about the lasting effects of residential schools. “Every Child Matters” remains a guiding message for this day and throughout the year.

The Town of Shelburne remains dedicated to supporting truth, reconciliation, and meaningful awareness throughout the year—not only on September 30. By learning about the past, listening to Indigenous voices, and building relationships grounded in respect, we strengthen our community and contribute to a shared path forward.
