From mid-September to the end of March, the Centre Dufferin Recreation Complex (CDRC) runs a variety of skating programs in the arena. These include hockey leaguesfigure skating programs, public skating and shinny hockey.

Skating program descriptions

Drop in recreational roller skating or blading. Participants must bring their own roller skates or roller blades. Helmets are highly recommended. Pre register in advance or drop in!

Drop in recreational skating for those of all ages. This skate time is a quieter time for parent/tots, adults etc. Skate helpers are available for use. 

Fee: $3.50 per skater

Adults can bring their sticks to the ice to improve their shot and stick handling. This is an unstructured ice time for adults to work on their skills. All participants are required to wear a CSA approved helmet. This program is unsupervised.

Fee: $5.00 per person

Shinny hockey is a non competitive, non contact, informal drop in hockey program. This program is unsupervised. Full equipment is required.

Fee: $10.00 per player, $5.00 per goalie

Drop in recreational skating for people of all ages. Skate helpers are available for use.

Fee: $4.00 per skater

This ice time is for practicing figure skating skills. Children under the aged 12 and under must be supervised by an adult during this time.

Skating rules

If you attend any of our public skating hours, you must follow the public skating rules. All children under the age 10 must be with a guardian who is 12 years old or older.

The CDRC highly recommends the use of CSA approved helmets during public skating.

The following rules must be followed during public skate sessions:

  • Ice skates must be worn to enter ice surface (no boots/shoes are permitted on the ice).
  • For safety reasons carrying a child and use of cell phones or handheld devices are not permitted while skating.
  • No strollers, buggies, pylons, backpacks, sleds or chairs are allowed on the ice however wheelchair use during public skating is permitted (wheelchairs should follow closely along the boards). Skate helpers are available for use.
  • Hockey sticks are not allowed during public skate times.
  • Food or drink is not allowed on ice surface.
  • All skaters must skate in the same direction.
  • Listen, adhere to and respect the Skate Patrol at all time.


The following activities/equipment are not allowed on the ice:

  • Carrying children (including baby carriers).
  • Hockey pucks and sticks.
  • Rough play, speed, multiplayer games (tag, races, glove throwing).
  • Foul language or inappropriate behaviour.
