Automated Speed Enforcement (ASE)

Automated Speed Enforcement (ASE) is a system that uses a camera and a speed detector to catch drivers who are going too fast. This helps make roads safer for everyone.

ASE works with other safety tools like:

  • Speed bumps
  • School zones
  • Safety signs
  • Police checks
  • Education programs

These tools help keep people safe by:

  • Getting drivers to follow speed limits
  • Changing how drivers behave
  • Teaching people why it’s important to slow down

How ASE Works

ASE cameras are placed in school zones and community safety zones. If a car is going too fast, the camera takes a picture of it. A ticket is then sent to the person who owns the car, even if they weren’t the one driving. The ticket comes with a fine (money you have to pay).

Here’s what happens:

  1. The camera takes a picture of the speeding car.
  2. A safety officer checks the picture.
  3. A ticket is mailed to the car owner’s address.
  4. The owner has 30 days to pay or ask for a review.

Important: Car owners must make sure their address is correct with the Ministry of Transportation. Tickets are mailed within 23 days and are considered received 7 days after mailing.

ASE Signage

Mandatory signage is installed near ASE camera locations to inform motorists where ASE cameras are coming soon and when they're in use.

"Municipal Speed Camera Coming Soon" Signage

In accordance with the Highway Traffic Act, "Coming Soon" signs are required to be installed for a minimum of 90 days prior to ASE cameras being activated.  This allows for drivers to have advance warning prior to the activation of enforcement via ASE cameras.

"Municipal Speed Camera In Use" Signage

The presence of "Municipal Speed Camera In Use" signage indicates to motorists that the Automated Speed Enforcement Camera has been activated, and is actively enforcing speed on that particular road in that specific community safety zone.  Speeding above the posted speed limit will result in a Penalty Order being issued.

About Town of Shelburne's ASE Program

The Town of Shelburne uses a special system called the Administrative Penalty System. This means tickets from ASE do not go to court.

The Goal

The goal is not to punish. The goal is to educate and provide sufficient warning to all drivers that ASE cameras are in use, while providing ample warning through onsite signage, public education, and a phased in camera activation approach. ASE has been proven to slow down traffic and managing speed improves traffic safety for the community.
