Understanding and Preventing Sewer Backups
What Is a Sewer Backup?
A sewer backup occurs when wastewater can no longer flow out of your property due to a blockage in the sanitary sewer lateral—the pipe that connects your home to the Town of Shelburne’s sewer main. When this pipe is blocked, wastewater may back up into your home.
How to Prevent a Sewer Backup
To help prevent blockages:
- Only flush the 3 P’s: Pee, Poop, and (toilet) Paper.
- Never flush or pour the following down your drains:
- Wipes of any kind (even “flushable”)
- Personal hygiene products
- Paper towels
- Fats, oils, and grease (FOG)
What to Do If You Suspect a Sewer Blockage
-
Stop using water immediately
Avoid flushing toilets or running taps to prevent further backup.
-
Call a licensed plumber
The plumber will inspect and clear the blockage. This is the homeowner’s responsibility and expense. A camera inspection will help determine where the blockage is located.
-
If the blockage is on Town property
Share the plumber’s video (CCTV) with the Town. If confirmed, the Town will assess and address the issue.
-
Contact your insurance provider
Always notify your insurer if there is damage from a sewer backup.
