Back to School Safety Reminder for Drivers and Families

Back to School Safety Reminder for Drivers and Families

As students across Shelburne prepare to return to school, local officials and school staff are reminding drivers and families to prioritize safety, especially around school zones and school buses.

With buses back on the roads and children walking to school, drivers must stop for school buses displaying flashing red lights and an extended stop-arm. Passing a stopped school bus is not only illegal, it’s dangerous. Children may be crossing the road unexpectedly, and visibility can be limited.

In addition, school zones around Centennial Hylands Elementary School, Glenbrook Elementary School, and Hyland Heights Elementary School have designated NO STOPPING areas. These zones are clearly marked and are in place to protect children and families. Even momentary stops can create hazardous conditions, making it difficult for children to be seen as they exit vehicles.

Vehicles found stopping in these restricted zones will be subject to immediate ticketing. To avoid penalties and ensure everyone’s safety, parents and guardians are encouraged to take a few extra moments to find safe, legal parking areas when dropping off or picking up their children.

Let’s work together to make this school year safe and successful for all students. Safety is a shared responsibility.
