COVID 19 Update April 23, 2021

Mayor Wade Mills COVID-19 Update

April 23, 2021

There were 4,505 new COVID-19 cases reported in Ontario today.  Province-wide, our cumulative reported totals are now 437,310 cases, 387,712 resolved cases, 7,863 reported deaths. It is also being reported that there are currently 818 patients currently in ICU with 593 of those on ventilators, both of which are metrics that are up from last week’s report.

Within the Wellington Dufferin Guelph Public Health region, we have seen an additional 63 new cases reported since yesterday. We currently have 591 active cases throughout the region. There are currently 75 health unit residents in hospital which is an increase of 25 over last week. Within Dufferin County specifically, we have had 24 new cases reported within the last 24-hour period. Our current active case count stands at 163 for the county which is also up from last week. There are 14 Dufferin County residents being reported as in hospital, and Headwaters alone is reporting eight patients with confirmed COVID-19. Within the Town of Shelburne, it is reported that we have 16 residents who are currently positive which is down slightly over last week. Orangeville currently stands at 80 active cases.

Within the Wellington Dufferin Guelph Public Health region, we have administered a total of 90,435 does of vaccine as of this morning. As reported earlier, all individuals over 16 years of age in our region can pre-register through the public health online system. Also, all Ontarians over 40 years of age can also book appointments through pharmacies for the AstraZeneca vaccine.  This is still the surest and best way out of this so I continue to encourage all residents to get vaccinated as soon as they are able.

Effective today, flights into Canada from India and Pakistan are banned for the next 30 days amid explosive outbreaks of the virus within those two countries.

I will be joining other provincial mayors this afternoon for a conference call with the Premier and several Ministers for an update on restrictions and enforcement measures. As many will now know, the province walked back some of the more expansive measures that it implemented last Friday including the closure of playgrounds and expanded police powers. After today’s call, I will report any significant updates that may impact our community.

Be safe,

Mayor Wade Mills
