COVID 19 Update August 28, 2020
COVID-19 Update from Mayor Wade Mills August 28, 2020
There were 122 new COVID-19 cases reported in Ontario today with most of those being concentrated within the GTA area. Province-wide, our cumulative reported totals now sit at 41,935 cases, 38,023resolved cases, 2,796 reported deaths, and 1,103 confirmed active cases.
Within the Wellington Dufferin Guelph Public Health region, we now have had a total of 556 cases since the beginning of the pandemic. There are currently 18 active cases throughout the region and one person is in hospital. Within Dufferin County, our cumulative total now sits at 200 cases which is up two from last Friday’s report. There are five active cases within Dufferin but no hospitalizations.
We are now more than a month into the Stage 3 re-openings for most of Ontario. The good news is that we have not seen any dramatic “spike” or “surge” in the number of new cases which was a potential concern resulting from the re-opening. That said, we have been seeing a slight upward trend since early August. The number of new daily cases fell to below 80 on August 9th but the five-day rolling average has been on the incline since then.
We are in relatively good shape compared to many other areas and we should be proud of the collective efforts that our community has demonstrated. Still, the numbers serve as a reminder that we are not yet through this fight. We still have a distance to go, and current modelling is still predicting a strong likelihood of a “second wave” to begin around the first part of October. I ask that you stay strong and remain focused and vigilant.
Have a great weekend and stay well.
Mayor Wade Mills
