COVID 19 Update February 26, 2021
COVID-19 Update from Mayor Wade Mills February 26, 2021
There were 1,258 new COVID-19 cases reported in Ontario today which is the largest single-day increase in almost two weeks. Province-wide, our cumulative reported totals now sit at 298,569 cases, 281,331 resolved cases, 6,944 reported deaths, and 683 patients currently hospitalized. It is also being reported that there are currently 284 patients currently in ICU and 193 of those are on ventilators.
Within the Wellington Dufferin Guelph Public Health region, we have seen an additional 27 new cases reported since yesterday. We currently have 140 active cases throughout the region. There are currently seven health unit residents in hospital. Within Dufferin County specifically, we have had five new case reported within the last 24-hour period. Our current active case count stands at 23 for the county. Headwaters Healthcare Centre is reporting that they currently only have one patient with COVID-19 which is good news. The best news of all however, is that we have gone all week with NO active cases among residents of Shelburne!
We have also had some good news on the vaccine front with Health Canada’s approval of the AstraZeneca vaccine. There are currently about 20 million doses of this vaccine on order for Canada which will certainly help. This particular vaccine can be stored with conventional refrigeration which makes it a good candidate for use in doctor’s offices and through mobile vaccination clinics.
I joined a number of other mayors this morning on a call with Premier Ford, General Hillier, and Ministers Clark, Elliot and Jones to discuss the continued vaccine roll-out. Wellington Dufferin Guelph Public Health received special mention for leading the charge when it comes to vaccinations for folks over 80 years of age. Residents over 80 and living within our health unit region, you can pre-register now at https://register.wdgpublichealth.ca
The absence of any active cases within our community is proof that what we are doing is working. Thank you all for your continued efforts and let’s keep it up!
Keep well,
Mayor Wade Mills
