COVID 19 Update June 26

COVID-19 Update from Mayor Wade Mills June 26, 2020

Ontario is reporting the lowest number of new COVID-19 cases in more than three months with only 111 reported within the past 24 hours. This brings our new cumulative reported provincial totals to 34,316 cases, 29,754 resolved cases, and 2,644 total reported deaths. Within the Wellington Dufferin Guelph Public Health region, the new cumulative total is 470 cases (up four from yesterday) with 181 of those being from within Dufferin County (up one from yesterday).

As it stands right now, the Canada-US border is closed to non-essential travel until July 21st. Premier Ford offered some rather direct comments yesterday indicating that he wants to see it remain closed after that date. His concerns are over the fact that cases continue to increase in a number of US states and he fears that opening the border too soon may worsen the possible “second wave” that is expected in the fall.

Today the Premier announced that his government will be providing up to $4 million for the Seniors Community Grant Program designed to help non-profit organizations and local services that offer programs from seniors to combat isolation and help with safety and well-being. This is announcement marks a significant increase in funding for the program over last year.

Yesterday, Prime Minister Trudeau provided some details on a new program being called the Canada Student Service Grant. This grant will be available to post-secondary students and recent graduates and would provide one-time payments of up to $5,000.00 for volunteering in COVID-related efforts. The grant will pay $1,000 for every 100 hours volunteered.

Please enjoy the upcoming weekend! Let’s hope for nice weather and let’s all continue to make good decisions and be safe while we’re out!

Mayor Wade Mills
