Covid 19 Update March 19
COVID-19 Update from Mayor Wade Mills
March 19, 2021
There were 1,745 new COVID-19 cases reported in Ontario today which is up from the 1,553 new cases reported yesterday. Province-wide, our cumulative reported totals are now 325,254 cases, 304,789 resolved cases, 7,212 reported deaths, and 759 patients currently hospitalized. It is also being reported that there are currently 309 patients currently in ICU and 176 of those are on ventilators.
Within the Wellington Dufferin Guelph Public Health region, we have seen an additional 21 new cases reported since yesterday. We currently have 114 active cases throughout the region which is down from last Friday. There are currently 10 health unit residents in hospital which is also down. Within Dufferin County specifically, we have had seven new cases reported within the last 24-hour period. Our current active case count stands at 34 for the county and three Dufferin County residents are being reported as in hospital. Within the Town of Shelburne, it is reported that we still have nine residents who are currently positive.
There were 56,134 tests administered throughout the province over the past 24 hours resulting in a positivity rate of 3.3% which is up from 3.1% yesterday. There have been 1,420,599 doses of vaccine administered across Ontario and 294,749 total vaccinations completed. The provincial registry for vaccinations became operational on March 15th but our local health unit is continuing to use our local registration system. Residents of our area can still register to be vaccinated at https://register.wdgpublichealth.ca. As noted last week, our local system is now allowing registrations for those slated to be vaccinated under Phase 2 including residents who are 60+ as well as essential workers who are not able to work from home.
The concern being expressed over the variants is still very much top of mind for health officials. These professionals are urging us to keep up with the preventative measures to slow the spread until the vaccination roll outs have time to reach a critical mass of our population. That means that we must remain diligent about distancing, limiting social interaction and continuing to wear masks and practice good hand hygiene. This has been referred to as the “final push” to the finish line and I encourage all residents to continue to push together in the same direction!
Stay well,
Mayor Wade Mills
