Discover the Language of Cree: A Cultural Exhibit at Shelburne Town Hall Art Gallery
The Town of Shelburne, in collaboration with the Arts, Culture and Heritage Committee and the Canadian Language Museum, invites the public to explore the rich linguistic heritage of Cree at a special one-week exhibit from September 29 to October 3, 2025, hosted at the Shelburne Town Hall Art Gallery, located at 203 Main Street East, 2nd Floor.
Open daily from 8:30 AM to 4:30 PM (closed from 12:00 PM to 1:00 PM), this exhibit offers a unique opportunity to learn about Cree, the most widely spoken Indigenous language in Canada. In 2011, over 100,000 Canadians reported a Cree dialect as their mother tongue. Spoken across a vast area from the Atlantic Ocean to the Rocky Mountains, Cree is one of the eleven official languages of the Northwest Territories and a principal language of the James Bay regional government in Quebec.
Visitors will discover fascinating facts about the language, including how Cree speakers refer to themselves and their language using names distinct from the externally coined terms like "Cree," "Atikamekw," "Montagnais," and "Naskapi."
This exhibit is free and open to all. Whether you're a language enthusiast, educator, student, or simply curious about Indigenous cultures, this is a meaningful opportunity to engage with Canada's linguistic diversity.
