New Water Tower

New Water Tower Construction

The Town of Shelburne will soon have a new water tower, beginning construction this year and starting operations in 2022.  The new water tower will be located on Luxton Way, just east of the Town’s public works yard.

Why a New Water Tower?

The main function of a water tower is to store and pressurize the Town’s water system, which is not only important for when you turn on your tap, but also to make sure that there is enough water supply and pressure for emergencies and firefighting capabilities.

The Ministry of the Environment provides guidelines on how much water storage is needed based on the Town’s maximum daily water usage and required fire flow volumes and has approved the project. The new tower is needed to meet the need of the current and future planned population.

In 2012, the Town completed a Schedule ‘B’ Municipal Class Environmental Assessment that concluded the Town needed additional storage on top of the 3,410 cubic metres stored in the existing water tower. This assessment looked at different ways that this could be achieved and concluded that the best solution was constructing a new tower at a new location.

Since then, the Town’s Engineer, S. Burnett & Associates Ltd. (SBA) has reassessed the Town’s water storage needs based on current population growth projections. SBA concluded that storage of similar size to the existing tower would meet the Town’s water storage needs for the next 20 years.

What Will the Tower Look Like?

The new tower will look very similar to the existing Town’s Water Tower and have the same approximate height of water, which will result in a total tower height of approximately 48 metres.  Although aeronautical lighting will be used on the new water tower, there will be no flood lights or bright illumination.

A shadow study was completed for the Town that concluded that nearby houses would not be significantly impacted by shade from the new tower.
