Proclamation Louis Riel Day

Proclamation: Louis Riel Day November 16th 

WHEREAS the Metis people and their descendants have significantly contributed to the exploration, growth and development of Canada;

AND WHEREAS the Metis people are recognized under section 35 of the Constitution Act, 1982 as one of the Aboriginal peoples of Canada;

AND WHEREAS Louis Riel was a humanitarian, an advocate for the Metis people and one of the Metis people's foremost historic leaders who strove for justice and for the rights of the Metis people as Manitoba joined Confederation;

AND WHEREAS November 16th is an important and symbolic date recognized by Metis people across Canada each year in commemoration of the execution death of Louis Riel in 1885 for his leadership of the Northwest Resistance in defense of Metis people;

AND WHEREAS our community honours Metis history and culture and we recognize Louis Riel's proper place in Canadian history:

NOW THEREFORE, I, Mayor Wade Mills, on behalf of Council, do hereby proclaim November 16, 2022 as "Louis Riel Day" in the Town of Shelburne and encourage residents to join in the remembrance and celebration of Louis Riel.
