Salt and Sidewalks

Salt and Sidewalks

The Town of Shelburne asks that residents do not use straight salt on sidewalks. Although efforts are appreciated, applying straight salt can lead to refreezing issues creating worse ice conditions, harsh environmental impacts and be harmful to pets should they ingest or step on salt.

During Winter Maintenance efforts, the Town uses a sand and salt mixture which is 92% sand and 8% salt for all streets and sidewalks. This mixture provides tractions, aids with cutting through snow and ice, and has less impact on the environment.

Should residents wish to continue to clear sidewalks in front of their home, a similar mixture is highly recommended to be used.
