Shelburne’s Crossing Guards: Keeping Our Children Safe
Keeping children safe depends on everyone. Crossing guards are there to guide students, but drivers and cyclists must follow the law to ensure those crossings remain safe.
Ontario law is clear: all drivers and cyclists must come to a complete stop when a crossing guard raises their sign. You must remain stopped until every child and the crossing guard have fully cleared the roadway. Rolling through a crossing, rushing a turn, or moving ahead too early puts lives at serious risk.
Even a moment of impatience or distraction can have devastating consequences. Slowing down in school zones, staying alert, and respecting crossing guards helps ensure every child arrives safely.
For many crossing guards, the role is about more than safety. It is also about connection and community.
These daily interactions build trust, but safety must always come first.
Let’s all do our part by:
- Coming to a full and complete stop at crossings
- Remaining stopped until everyone is safely across
- Slowing down in school zones
- Staying alert and avoiding distractions
Respecting crossing guards is not only the law. It is a commitment to the safety of our children and our community.
