About Dr. Wendy Van Drunen

Dr. Wendy Van Drunen is a biologist and emerging natural history artist. Inspired by her two passions – art andWedny Bio science – she creates richly detailed and boldly coloured botanical paintings in traditional watercolour. Before pivoting towards the arts, Wendy spent over 15 years studying plant biology and evolutionary ecology. She completed her PhD at the University of Guelph, and has worked as a researcher and science educator at several universities across Ontario. In 2022 she earned a Botanical Illustration Certificate through the Royal Botanical Gardens Edinburgh, passing with distinction.

Wendy strives to create art that teaches as much as it inspires, transforming a sea of green into a tapestry woven with the unseen tales of plants. The plant straining out of a crack in the concrete sidewalk as you walk by – how does it survive in an environment it wasn’t made for? The smallest wildflower peeking through the grass in your lawn – why are its petals that exact colour anyway? These are the hidden ecological and evolutionary stories behind Wendy’s works, which encourage people to take a closer look and connect with nature in their daily lives.

A native Ontario-an, Wendy recently moved to a small home in historic Shelburne where she and her husband live with their two adorable retired racing greyhounds.
