Shovelled Snow Does Not Belong on the Road

Shovelled Snow Does Not Belong on the Road

Depositing snow or ice on or across the road is not only a safety hazard; it is also against the law. Residents must pile all snow on their property and should utilize their front yard for storing snow.

Section 181 of the Highway Traffic Act prohibits the depositing of snow and ice on a roadway without written permission from the Ministry or other road authority. R.S.O 1990, c. H.8, S. 181. Failure to comply with the Highway Traffic Act may result in a fine being issued to the property owner or contractor.

Please do not shovel, plow, or blow snow onto roads or sidewalks. If you have a snow removal contractor, make sure they are aware this practice is unsafe and not permitted.
