Stay Safe & Stay Off Stormwater Ponds
Stay Safe and Stay Off Stormwater Ponds
Stormwater Ponds are not for recreation – they are not safe to skate, sled or walk on.
The Town of Shelburne is reminding people to stay off stormwater ponds, for any type of recreational use.
Stormwater ponds store and release snowmelt, rain, and surface water. While some of the ponds may look natural, it’s what's below the surface that makes stormwater ponds different from regular ponds.
Stormwater ponds contain moving water throughout the year. As a result, water flow and levels can change quickly without warning. The pond water may also contain melting snow, road salts, and other contaminants which prevents the formation of reliable, safe ice.
Extreme caution should always be taken when around stormwater management ponds.
The Town’s Bylaw Department will continue to monitor and enforce those participating in any activities on the stormwater ponds in Shelburne.
