The Centre Dufferin Recreation Complex (CDRC) has a 15 metre by 25 metre, six lane, seasonal heated outdoor pool that offers swimming lessons and recreational programs to our community. The pool is open each year from mid-June to the end of August. If you would like to rent the pool or for more information contact the CDRC pool please see the contact information at the bottom of this page.
The CDRC Pool is scheduled to open in June 2023. Summer 2023 outdoor pool program scheduled for viewing Monday April 3, 2023 at 9:00am. Registration scheduled to open Monday April 10, 2023. More information to come.
Swimming Lessons
The CDRC will be transitioning to the Lifesaving Society Swim for Life program the summer of 2023. Each session consists of 10 swimming lessons offered Monday-Friday.
June swimming lessons are scheduled between 4:30-6:30pm.
Sessions 1-4 of swimming lessons run and are scheduled from 8:00am-12:30pm and 4:30-6:45pm

Adult and teen swim basic lessons are a group swimming lesson designed for new swimmers. Participants will learn the basics of swimming including floats, glides, proper kicking techniques etc. Each session must have a minimum of 4 participants to run.

This lesson is for swimmers ages 12-24 months who are ready to learn to enjoy the water with a parent. |

Our preschool program is designed for those 3-6 years.
Preschool 1 |
These preschoolers will have fun learning to get in and out of the water. We'll help them jump into chest deep water. They'll float and glide on their front and back and learn to get their faces wet and blow bubbles underwater.

Preschool 2 |
These preschoolers learn to jump into chest-deep water by themselves and get in and out of the water with a lifejacket. They’ll submerge and exhale underwater. Wearing a lifejacket the will glide on their front and back.

Preschool 3 |
These youngsters will try both jumping and a sideways entry into deep water while wearing a lifejacket. They’ll recover objects from the bottom in waist deep water. They’ll work on kicking and gliding through the water on their front and back. |
Preschool 4 |
Advanced preschoolers will learn to do solo jumps into deeper water and get out by themselves. They’ll do sideways entries and open their eyes underwater. They’ll master a short swim on their front wearing a lifejacket and gliding and kicking on their side. |
Preschool 5 |
These youngsters get more adventuresome with a forward roll entry wearing a lifejacket and treading water for 10 seconds. They’ll work on front and back crawl swims for 5, interval training and get a giggle out of whip kick. |

Our swimmer program is designed for swimmers ages 6-12 years.
Swimmer 1A |
These beginners will become comfortable jumping into water with and without a lifejacket. They’ll learn to open their eyes, exhale and hold their breath under water. They’ll work on floats, glides and kicking through the water on their front and back.

Swimmer 1B |
These intermediate beginners will jump into deep water and return with a buoyant aid. They’ll learn to recover objects from the bottom in waist deep water. They’ll work on floats, glides and whip kick through the water on their front and back.

Swimmer 2 |
These advanced beginners will jump into deeper water and learn to be comfortable falling sideways into the water wearing a lifejacket. They’ll be able to support themselves at the surface without an aid, learn whip kick, swim 10m on their front and back and be introduced to flutter kick interval training (4x5m).

Swimmer 3A |
These junior swimmers will dive, do in water somersaults and handstands. They’ll work on 15m of front crawl, back crawl and 10m of whip kick. Flutter kick interval training increases to 4 x 15.

Swimmer 3B |
These swimmers will be introduced to egg beater and dolphin kick. Jump into deep water, tread 45sec, swim 50m. They’ll work on 20m of front crawl, back crawl and 15m of whip kick. Flutter kick interval training increases to 3x25m. |
Swimmer 4 |
These intermediate swimmers will swim 5m underwater and lengths of front crawl, back crawl, whip kick, and breaststroke arms with breathing. Their new bag of tricks includes the completion of the Canadian Swim to Survive Standard. They’ll cap it off with front crawl sprints over 25m and 4 x 25m front or back crawl interval training.

These swimmers will master shallow dives, cannonball entries, eggbeater kicks and in water backwards somersaults. They’ll refine their front and back crawl over 50m swims of each and breastroke over 25m. Then they’ll pick up the pace in 25m sprints and two interval training bouts: 4 x 50m front crawl or back crawl and 4 x 15m breastroke. |
Swimmer 6 |
These advanced swimmers will rise to the challenge of sophisticated aquatic skills including stride entries, compact jumps and lifesaving kicks like eggbeater and scissor kick. They’ll develop strength and power in head-up breaststroke sprints over 25m. They’ll easily swim lengths of front craw, back crawl and breakstroke and they’ll complain about the 300m workout.

Swimmer 7 - Rookie Patrol |
Swimmers continue stroke development with 50m swims of front crawl, back crawl and breaststroke. Lifesaving sport skills include a 25m obstacle swim and 15m object carry. First aid focuses on assessment of conscious victims, contacting EMS and treatment for bleeding. Fitness improves in 350m workouts and 100m timed swims. |
Swimmer 8 - Ranger Patrol |
Swimmers develop better strokes over 75m swims of each stroke. They tackle Lifesaving Sport Skills in the Lifesaving medley, timed object support and rescue with a buoyant aid. First aid focuses on assessment of unconscious victims, treatments of victims in shock and obstructed airway procedures. Skill drills develop a strong lifesaving foundation.

Swimmer 9 - Star Patrol |
Swimmers are challenged with 600m workouts, 300m timed swims and a 25m object carry. Strokes are refined over 100m swims. First aid focuses on treatment of bone and joint injuries and respiratory emergencies including asthma and allergic reactions. Lifesaving skills include defense methods, victim removals and rolling over and supporting a victim face up in shallow water.

Junior lifeguard camp
|
This is an opportunity for children ages 8-12 to learn about first aid and lifeguarding skills while having fun with friends competing in challenges, team building and activities around the pool. Interested children must be able to swim confidently in the deep end and meet the age requirement. It is an excellent opportunity to meet friends, keep up with swimming skills as well as learn new skills. This program will require a minimum 6 participants to run.
Prerequisite
Participants must be between the ages of 8-13 years old and confident swimming in the deep end.

Bronze star |
Bronze star is excellent preparation for success in Bronze Medallion. Participants develop problem solving and decision-making skills individually and in partners. Candidates learn CPR and develop the lifesaving skills needed to be their own lifeguard.
Prerequisite
Candidates must be minimum 11 years and confident swimming in the deep end.

Bronze medallion and emergency first aid
|
Candidates learn tows and carries, and defense methods and releases in preparation for challenging rescues of increased risk involving conscious and unconscious victims of various types. Lifesavers develop stroke efficiency and endurance in a 500m timed swim. Cost includes exam fee. This program will require a minimum 8 candidates to run.

Candidates must hold a Bronze Star Award or 13 years of age.

Bronze cross |
This course is designed for lifesavers who want the challenge of more advanced training including an introduction to safe supervision in aquatic facilities. Bronze Cross is a prerequisite for all advanced training programs including National Lifeguarding and Instructor certification. Includes a 600m swim. Cost includes exam fee. This program will need minimum 5 candidates to run.

National lifeguard
|
This certification is designed to develop a candidate's judgement, understanding of lifeguard principles and a mature and responsible attitude toward the lifeguard's role. National Lifeguard training emphasizes prevention and effective rescue response in emergencies including first aid treatment. Candidates develop teamwork, leadership and communication skills. Fitness requirements. 100% attendance is MANDATORY. This course needs a minimum 10 participants to run.

Candidates must be 15 years of age and hold a Bronze Cross and Standard First Aid CPR-C certification.

General lesson information

What level should I register in? |
If you are not sure what level to register your child in, contact the CDRC Pool to request a screening from our swim instructors during recreational swim times.
|
First day |
On the first day of your lessons, all swimmers will check in at the pool entrance gate to confirm who their swim instructor is. Please inform the instructor if your swimmer is repeating a level. |
Meeting spot |
Classes will meet daily at the same spot. Swimmers will meet at their instructors photo located on the pool side fence. Please wait with young children at the designated meeting area. |
Bathing/Swimming attire |
Bathing/swimming attire is defined as clothing that is clean and used specifically for the purpose of swimming, at the facility's discretion. Children who are not toilet trained must wear a waterproof pant (i.e Little Swimmers) under their bathing suit. |

Lesson viewing |
We ask that you watch from outside the pool fencing while your child is in lessons. No spectators will be allowed on the pool deck once the lessons have began. |
Missed classes |
Make-up classes and refunds are not available to students who miss a class. Credits can be requested in writing for absences due to medical reasons. |
Instructor requests |
Contact the CDRC to make instructor requests after you have registered your child in a swim program. We will do our best to accommodate instructor requests, however we cannot guarantee that requests will be granted. |
Low enrollment |
Programs that do not meeting the registration requirements may be cancelled at any time. Programs may also be combined to meet the program enrollment minimums. |
Questions or comments during lessons |
There is a designated on deck instructor who is available to answer questions. This instructor is a lesson expert and can solve most problems quickly. Do not hesitate to speak to one of these staff members at any time during your lessons. Please do not wait until the last class. |

Public swim sessions
Pool toys and personal floatation aids are not available to use in the pool during public, family and parent and tot swims this season. Lifejackets are available if needed. Swimmers are encouraged to bring their own lifejackets, provided they are clean and in good condition.
Most programs and activities are age specific. We ask that you respect the guidelines which were developed to serve the best interests of all participants, and to ensure an enjoyable experience in our programs. Family and parent & tot swims are targeted to families and caregivers with young children. Adult/senior swims are targeted to adults, seniors and special needs patrons. Lane swims are available to those able to swim lengths.
Recreational swimming hours may change due to special events or program needs. Changes will be posted on the website www.shelburne.ca.

Supervision requirements |
Supervision requirements are enforced at all swims and pool rentals. Swimmers who do not meet these standards will not be granted admission to the pool. Please review the following information prior to arriving at the facility.
All children 9 years of age and under must be accompanied by a guardian who is at least 14 years of age and is responsible for their direct supervision.
Directly supervising
Caregiver is in the water, eyes on children, able to verbally communicate with children and be able to quickly approach them at any time in the water.
Ages 0-6 years |
Children 6 years of age and under must be within arm’s reach of a caregiver (near enough to reach swimmer by extending one’s arms) 14 years of age and older. Maximum of 2 children per caregiver. |
Ages 7-9 years |
- Children between the ages of 7-9 years who are unable to complete a facility swim test must be directly supervised in the water by a caregiver 14 years of age and older.
- Children between the ages of 7-9 years who pass a swim test are required to be accompanied by a guardian who maintains visual contact with the child at all times. The caregiver must be at least 14 years of age and remain in the pool or on pool deck at all times. Maximum of 4 children per caregiver.

Ages 10 and older |
Children ages 10+ years and older may be admitted to the pool unaccompanied, individuals may be asked to demonstrate their swimming ability by passing a facility swim test. |
Facility swim test |
Take a facility swim test in order to determine what level if supervision is required. To pass a facility swim test, swimmers need to:
- Swim 25m front swim with your face in the water
- Tread water for one minute
- Jump in off the side and swim to the wall

Medical conditions |
Participants with serious medical conditions must be accompanied by individuals knowledgable of their condition and responsible for their direct supervision. |

Outdoor Pool Rentals
One hour private pool rentals are available on Saturday and Sunday throughout the summer pool season. Pool rentals include qualified lifeguards.

- No food or drink permitted on the pool deck.
- All CDRC Pool Admission Standards MUST be followed during pool rentals.

Payment Policies
Payments |
We accept exact cash and debit, HST is additional to fees where applicable. For confirmation, payment must be made at time of registration. Receipts will be issued at the time of registration. |
Cancellations & refunds |
What happens if I miss a lesson?
If you miss a lesson, you will not be rescheduled or refunded. It is always best to check the dates and times that have been scheduled for your lessons. Refunds will not be issued due to weather conditions or pool fouling.
Can I receive a refund if I need to withdraw from a program or if it is cancelled?
Refunds requested 10 days prior to the program start date will receive a full refund, less a $25 administration fee. Refunds requested within 10 days of program will receive a 50% refund, less a $25 administration fee. No refunds will be issued after the start of of the program. A refund will be issued for all programs cancelled by the CDRC. Withdrawal from a program for medical reasons will be considered on an individual basis and may require a medical note. Please allow 4 - 6 weeks to process a refund.
How do I apply for a refund?
All refund requests must be addressed to the Facility Administration Manager and must be in writing (including e-mail).

Non-Resident Fee
All programs offered by the CDRC are subsidized by municipal taxes from our funding municipalities, which include: The Town of Shelburne, The Town of Mono, the Township of Amaranth and the Township of Melanchthon. To keep the cost low for residents who contribute to the CDRC, through their municipal taxes, a user fee of $12.00 per participant is added to the registration costs for non-residents. A non-resident is defined as anyone who does not pay property taxes directly to the funding municipalities. The CDRC reserves the right to request proof of residency.
NSF Cheque Fee
There is a $25 fee for returned cheque. If your payment is returned, we will require the full payment plus the NSF fee paid by cash, debit or certified cheque to remain registered in the program.
Additional Copy Fee
To reprint or copy tax receipts, a $5 fee per session, per program will apply.

General Pool Information
Changerooms |
The family changeroom will be open for washroom use only with a maximum of 1 person at a time. Lockers and changing area will be closed for the 2021 summer season. Bathers must arrive at the pool in their swimwear and each group will be assigned a section on the pool deck to keep their belongings, 2m away from other groups. Babies should wear baby swim diapers or plastic pants under a bathing suit. |
Accessibility
|
The CDRC pool has a chairlift available for getting in and out of the water. When you arrive at the facility contact a staff member for assistance with the proper entrance and equipment. Gradual steps into the water are also available. |
Medical conditions |
Patrons with pre-existing health conditions are at higher risk and it is recommended that they do not participate in or attend any of the programs at this facility. |
Personal property |
Participants are responsible for their person belongings while participating in programs. The CDRC assumes no responsibility for lost or stolen items. Lockers will not be available for the 2020 season. All personal belongings will be left in a designated space on the pool deck. The CDRC encourages participants to arrive at the pool with minimal personal belongings. |
Photographs/videos |
All program participants must have completed/signed a waiver for photography. Photographic/video equipment (including personal digital assistants and cellular phones) are not allowed in changerooms, washrooms or program spaces. Taking photos or videos of participants during programs is not permitted. Participants will be asked for written permission to have photographs taken by the media or CDRC staff for promotional purposes.

Residents of Shelburne are eligible to receive a partial refund of fees (residential to non-residential rate) when the Shelburne outdoor pool is closed.
