Do You Need a Permit for That? What Shelburne Residents Should Know Before Starting Outdoor Projects

As warmer weather arrives, many homeowners are looking for ways to make the most of their outdoor space. Whether it’s expanding a driveway, installing a patio, or adding a new walkway, the Town of Shelburne is reminding residents to check permit and zoning requirements before beginning any project.

From camping gear and yard tools to sports equipment, garage space can fill up quickly. As a result, many residents consider expanding their driveway. It’s important to take caution before paving or making changes to your property.  Driveway extensions are only permitted on the private portion of your property and must meet Zoning By-law requirements.

Projects that may seem simple like widening a driveway or adding a patio can have important impacts on drainage, property boundaries, and surrounding infrastructure. Planning ahead helps avoid costly delays, required rework, or potential fines.

Residents are reminded that approvals may be needed for a range of exterior improvements, including:

  • Driveway widening or extensions
  • Patios, walkways, and pathways
  • Porches and decks
  • Pools
  • Sheds and other alterations to outdoor structures

To ensure compliance and a smooth process, the Town encourages residents to:

  • Confirm whether permits or approvals are required
  • Review zoning and setback requirements
  • Ensure the project stays within property boundaries
  • Contact the Planning Department before starting construction

Always call before you start, is the key message. Early communication with Town staff can help identify any requirements and keep projects on track from the beginning.

The Town of Shelburne’s Planning Department is available to guide residents through the process and answer any questions.
