OPP Launch CAMSafe Program in Dufferin County

Help Keep Shelburne Safe with CAMSafe

The Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) is encouraging Shelburne residents and business owners to consider joining CAMSafe, a voluntary program that helps police identify security cameras that may assist with investigations when incidents occur in the community.

CAMSafe is a secure registry that allows property owners to provide basic information about the location of their security cameras. If an incident occurs nearby, police can use the registry to identify cameras that may have captured relevant footage and then contact the camera owner to request access. Police cannot access camera feeds, recordings, cloud accounts, or systems through the registry.

Participation is completely voluntary, and registrants can update or remove their information at any time.

The program is designed to strengthen partnerships between police and the community by helping investigators quickly identify potential video evidence while respecting privacy. Security camera footage can often provide valuable information when investigating property crimes, thefts, vandalism, suspicious activity, or other incidents.

During a recent presentation to the Shelburne Police Services Board, community safety representatives highlighted the importance of residents and businesses working together with police through prevention, awareness, and appropriate reporting. CAMSafe is one of the tools available to help support safer and more connected communities.

How CAMSafe Works

  1. Register your residential or commercial security cameras at www.camsafe.ca.
  2. Provide basic contact details and information about camera locations.
  3. If an incident occurs in your area, police may contact you to ask whether you are willing to share footage that could assist an investigation.
  4. The decision to share footage remains entirely with the camera owner.

Did You Know?

  • Police cannot view your cameras through CAMSafe.
  • Police cannot access your cloud storage or security system.
  • Only camera location and contact information are stored in the registry.
  • Participation is free and voluntary.

Community Safety Reminders

The OPP also reminds residents that community safety starts with awareness and prevention:

  • Keep vehicles locked and remove valuables from sight.
  • Ensure exterior lighting is working properly.
  • Secure sheds, garages, and other outbuildings.
  • Report suspicious activity through the appropriate channels.

Know Where to Report

  • Emergency or immediate danger: 911
  • Police matters (non-emergency): OPP at 1-888-310-1122
  • Anonymous information about a crime: Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-8477

Whether you are a homeowner, tenant, or business owner, registering your cameras with CAMSafe is a simple way to support community safety and assist police when needed.

"Everyone plays a part in keeping our communities safe. CAMsafe will help support members of the Dufferin County OPP Detachment to better collaborate with our communities to support the OPP's Vision of Safe Communities, A Secure Ontario. Success of this program requires our community to voluntarily participate by joining the CAMsafe registry. I would encourage residents and business owners alike to kindly consider registering their cameras into CAMsafe to help keep our communities safe and secure."
