Waste containers and bags should be in a visible location at the end of your driveway. Do not place waste containers on roads, sidewalks, icy surfaces, on or behind snowbanks. Please ensure bins are behind the curb to allow for snowplow operators to clear roads right to the curb. This helps to keep catch basins clear and keeps roads safe for vehicles and pedestrian traffic. Improper set out can result in damage to containers by snowplows.
Any waste containers or bags buried in snow or blocked by snowbanks will not be collected for health and safety reasons.
Winter weather can be a challenge for collection of recyclables, green carts and garbage.
Winter wastewise tips for residents:
- Do not place waste bins on a snowbank, icy surface or on the road. Instead, shovel a part of the curb area when possible, to make room for waste bins, or place waste bins at the end of your driveway.
- On windy days, place heavier items such as magazines or glass bottles on top of the lighter items in your Blue Box. Consider bagging your recyclables in blue-tinted bags so it doesn’t end up as litter on our streets & yards. Don’t overfill your blue box. Keep material below the rim to prevent the wind from catching it and blowing it out of the bin.
- Food scraps can freeze to the bottom of your green bin in the winter. Use Certified Compostable bags or wrap compostable materials in newspaper to absorb moisture to help prevent materials from freezing to the bottom of the bin.
To ensure your waste is collected, have it out by 7 a.m. on your collection day. Routes can change. Keep in mind that sometimes collection routes are altered to accommodate winter weather, snow removal and construction, among other things.
