Natasha Paterson Memorial Park Playground Project
Natasha Paterson Memorial Park Playground
Natasha Paterson Memorial Park is being upgraded to offer an improved and inclusive play structure and park with AODA compliant features.
Background
Natasha Paterson Memorial Park, located at 340 Gordon Street, will undergo a playground replacement project.
As part of the 2023 Parks and Recreation Master Plan, the following areas were identified for improvement:
- Playground equipment is scattered across various safety surface areas and lacks accessible pathways connecting to the playground areas.
- There are no trails or pathways linking the pavilion, park features, and other amenities within the park.
Goals and Outcomes
The playground replacement project will feature the following upgrades:
- Multi-Use Trails and Pathways: Construction of accessible pathways connecting the parking area, washrooms, pavilion, ball diamonds, and other park features to improve overall connectivity and accessibility.
- Consolidated Playground Area: Update and centralize play structures into a single, larger playground area located near the washrooms and pavilion for convenience and improved usability.
- Accessible Pathway to Playground: Establish an accessible pathway leading to the playground
- Rubberized surfacing to provide universal/barrier free access and enhance safety for all users.
The Town of Shelburne completed the tender process for the playground and landscape works in October 2024. The playground has been awarded to open space Solutions who provided a unique playground design. Their design goals were to provide a wide range of age-appropriate play experiences; develop a theme that would fit within the environment; and provide inclusive opportunities for users of all ages and abilities.
The new play structure will have accessible ramps and transfer stations; other exciting features include:
- Sensory Panels
- Universal carousel
- Non-verbal communication board
- Suspended Nest
- Swings including an accessible seat and 1 seatbelt seat
Council’s commitment to the park improvements is outlined in Council’s Strategic Priorities Goals - Sustainable, Engaged and Livable.
LP1 – Promote diversity, equity, and inclusion.
LP2 – Improve and enhance park and recreation services.
