Painted Crosswalks

Painted Crosswalks

Inspired by similar installations in other towns and cities worldwide, the Town of Shelburne Council considered the installation of three crosswalks at prominent locations in close proximity to downtown. On August 29, 2022 the first painted crosswalk "Every Child Matters Crosswalk" was approved through staff report CAO 2022-14 Every Child Matters Crosswalk – Orange Shirt Day 2022

Since 2022 the Town of Shelburne has three painted Crosswalks in the downtown area. The Lest We Forget Crosswalk, The Every Child Matters Crosswalk and The Pride Crosswalk.

2024 Discontinued

On April 8, 2024 Shelburne Council discontinued the pilot Painted Crosswalk Program read report DO 2024-04.

The Town of Shelburne’s pilot painted crosswalk program included three painted crosswalk locations:

Every Child Matters

William Street at Main Street*

Installed 2022

Pride

Victoria Street and Main Street

Installed 2023

Lest We Forget

William Street and First Avenue

Installed 2023

It was expected that all crosswalks would require a full repainting annually and costs would be included in the annual operating budget.

While deterioration due to high traffic volume and winter road maintenance was expected, it was much more drastic than originally anticipated. Even with repainting, the painted crosswalk images deteriorated very quickly primarily due to high traffic volume.

The report recommended discontinuing the pilot painted crosswalk program. The Town recognizes, shares, and provides education to the community regarding days/weeks/months of significance (heritage and awareness). This includes flag raisings, proclamations by Council and sharing information on our social media platforms and website shelburne.ca.

Town of Orangeville also implemented a painted cross walk program and has since discontinued it.
